CEO DATELINE - Volunteer Fire Council CEO dies suddenly at 52

Longtime National Volunteer Fire Council Executive Director and CEO Heather Schafer died suddenly at her Arnold, Md., home March 15, at the age of 52. Schafer had joined NVFC in 1993 and became chief executive in 1994.

"Her vision, innovation, and dedication has guided the organization through a period of tremendous growth," NVFC officials said in a statement. "She was an unwavering advocate for the volunteer emergency services community and will be greatly missed."
NVFC has more than 25,000 members, including individuals, state associations and corporations. The organization reported revenue of $2.3 million in 2019 and has a staff of 11.
Schafer also was an administrative member of the Arnold Volunteer Fire Department. She enjoyed boating and kayaking.
She is survived by her fiancé, Joseph Harthcock; her son, William Schafer; and other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the National Volunteer Fire Council or to the Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating, a non-profit dedicated to boating for those with disabilities or recovering warriors.
